A few days ago, Inda from the Koran Sindo ask some questions that I thought interesting about the porch and how to maximize our porch. Terrace houses including the important element, especially for Indonesia, which usually houses we have a terrace. This is because the deck has become part of the culture of respect for guests in the Indonesian culture.
– What is the linkages (or differences) between the porch and yard of a house?
Differences porch and yard, especially on its function. A porch is a transitional space between the ‘outside’ and ‘in’, usually it is very necessary, especially because there are times when residents are not comfortable for anyone lets go in the house. Terrace can also be used to receive guests, because sometimes we like the cozy atmosphere of the terrace, between outside and inside the house. Of course, because the atmosphere there is more space is cool, the wind was breezy.
Home page is included outer space, so its role is different from the terrace. In the courtyard, there is usually no place to sit. Maybe just lawn chairs. This page is also more functional as a garden.
– I read your article on the terrace at the terrace astudioarchitect.com good about and comfortable. My question: what elements should be there on a terrace?
Elements in the design of the terrace, consisting of elements of the building (design) and the natural elements. Building elements such as the design of terrace space, for example, forms the roof terrace, the pillars supporting the porch, and that other thing about the design of the patio area. For example such as shape of the window. Teradapat difference would have if we are or look at the Mediterranean-style windows and a minimalist style window. Besides, other elements such as selection of ceramic or tile floor, also influential.
Natural elements that I mean the natural elements such as ornamental plants, air, and the scenery around the garden and related to the setting. This natural element is an important element for a transitional spaces such as terraces, because here we feel the fresh air because of the trees, plants, and so on.
– Plants are considered any good to put on the porch?
Other plants are suitable for placing on the terrace area is usually a potted plant, such as Anthurium. Other potted plants will also help create a more beautiful terrace. Later, fruits and medicinal plants is also a wise choice. Plant shade trees are also very well planted around the patio area to help cool the atmosphere of the terrace.
– What should be considered when designing the porch?
In designing the porch, things to note is the function of the terrace. A good terrace, is a comfortable terrace, in the sense that it can be comfortably used to sit, or wait, or chat. If there is a good patio, terrace of course there is less good. A poor terrace such as the terrace is too small (despite a large house), or a porch that is not comfortable, such as sloping floors, or perhaps visually terrace too exposed, for example, when the terrace house with a very clearly visible from the street, there is usually a sense of not comfortable sitting there because it seemed to people passing by.
A terrace can also be equipped with the holder of the walls, wood, etc., that are part of the house. When designing, we can add a wall around 60-70 cm by the holder at the top. This is often encountered in old houses of colonial or traditional.
– If the land that we have limited what the terrace model that match?
Terrace land suitable for limited use every inch with a good design plan. Surely we can not use a chair that large-scale or impressed ‘heavy’ because it can make a patio feel more cramped. No need to force too many chairs. If the garden area is limited, use potted plants or hanging plants, vines and even to add a natural atmosphere. Terrace can also be made into a bale-bale, to be more comfortable. If the area is too narrow to be made permanent buildings, such as ingested demarcation line, use semi-permanent buildings such as walls, one meter-high bamboo and bamboo roof, too.
– About the position of the porch, we know the deck is a lower position, the same flat, or higher than the ground floor of the house. How consideration in determining it?
Terrace usually made lower than the floor of the main house, especially the consideration because we do not want to rain water into the house. For homes located in flood areas, sometimes elevated terrace to anticipate that the water does not enter the house.
– What about the berundak porch steps? (perhaps in terms of safety or aesthetic)
Same principle with the ladder, when the height of land and terrace floor is too high, we can use a railing or barrier. to be safer for children.
– Please explain further if you want to memungsikan terrace as the living room? (eg about insulation or designs made half-open)
Yes, the terrace which also serves as the living room can also be found in Indonesian traditional house, such as Betawi house. Therefore, there is nothing wrong actually applied in the design of modern homes. If we use this way, then we can use semi-permanent materials such as hollow iron framework with a cover glass or fiber glass. Could also use a bamboo or wood.
Examples can be seen in http://astudioarchitect.com/2008/12/teras-rumah-teras-yang-baik-adalah.html
Rather than forcing the living room, which is used only once in a while, why not use the terrace that serves as the living room. to suggest a more closed, we can use to make a more enclosed porch, for example, by making higher insulated (but still with a transparent material like glass or fiber glass), make a potted plant barriers views, or in any other way.
– We can optimize the function by making the porch like a hobby room (eg painting), space for hanging, and the garden. How your views or suggestions about this?
Yes. Even so nice if the terrace can be used for additional space in the house. Besides providing even build in cabinets, which are made from the wall, too, if possible, in order to use the hobby. Hanging space for clothes? Could, but in my opinion should be set apart drying room. To garden, can, we can make a garden terrace, although the land is limited, by adding potted plants, or vines.
– Switch to change the look of the porch topic. If we are bored with a terrace (for example) only consists of two chairs that flank the tables lined up in the middle, how do your suggestions seem to feel more alive terrace and comfortable?
Add the elements of the plant, then use ideas like hanging a painting (or create a painting on the wall of the terrace). add insulation, such as hollow iron frame with box box shape, and so on. In the design of so many things you can do to change the look. Paint the walls with new colors, also can help. Hanging decorations, or change the mood lighting on the porch.
